When dealing with the loss of a loved one abroad, the last thing anyone wants to think about is money. However, the reality is that repatriation services from Ireland to Lithuania are not cheap, and that is precisely why it is important to understand in advance what you are paying for. Over the years of our work, we have seen more than one family experience additional stress due to unexpected costs or unclear invoices.

Transparency in this field is not a luxury – it is a necessity. When people approach us asking "how much will it cost?", we always strive to explain not only the final amount but also what it consists of. Only by understanding the entire process and its components can you make informed decisions and avoid unpleasant surprises.

The cost of repatriation is not just a random number pulled out of thin air. It consists of several essential parts, each reflecting specific services and procedures.

The first and usually the largest expense is the transportation itself. Air transport from Ireland to Lithuania typically costs between 2,000 and 3,500 euros, depending on several factors: the flight route, coffin specifications, and seasonality. Yes, the season matters – during the summer months, when there are more flights, prices can be slightly lower than in winter, when the choice of flights is limited.

The second important component is the services in Ireland. This includes preparing the deceased for transportation, temporary preservation procedures, required documentation, and coordination with local authorities. These services usually cost 800–1,500 euros. Crucially, it depends on whether you work with a reliable partner company in Ireland or if every service is charged separately.

The third element is the services in Lithuania. This includes meeting the flight at the airport, transportation to the desired location, and assistance with handling paperwork in Lithuania. This part usually ranges from 400 to 800 euros, depending on the distance and additional requests.

This is exactly where problems begin for many families. Some companies advertise an attractive initial price but later add numerous "additional" fees that no one warned about in advance.

Paperwork is an area where unexpected costs often appear. Translation of the death certificate, legalization, and consular fees – all of this can add 150–300 euros to the final amount. However, these fees are not hidden or unexpected; they are necessary and legal. The only problem is when a company fails to mention them upfront.

Coffin specifications can also affect the price. Air transport requires a special zinc-lined coffin that meets international standards. Some companies include the simplest option in their initial price and charge extra for any preferences (better material, decorations). A proper zinc-lined coffin for air transport should cost 600–900 euros, and this amount should be included in the total price.

Storage fees are another area where extra costs can arise. If the process is delayed due to paperwork and the deceased remains in cold storage in Ireland longer, some companies charge an extra fee for each day. This can range from 50 to 100 euros per day, making it crucial that your chosen company works efficiently and does not stall the process without a valid reason.

Theory is one thing, but let's look at specific scenarios we encounter in practice.

Standard case: A person passed away in a hospital in Dublin, all documents are in order, and the family wants to bring them back to Vilnius. In this case, the total price usually ranges from 3,200 to 4,500 euros. This includes all necessary services with no hidden fees. The process takes 5–7 working days.

More complex case: Death occurred outside a hospital, and a post-mortem examination is required. Here, the process takes longer (10–14 days), and the price can rise to 4,500–5,500 euros. The additional cost arises not from the examination itself (which is covered by the state) but from the longer waiting period and extra coordination efforts.

Urgent case: The family wishes to bring their loved one back as quickly as possible due to religious or personal reasons. Urgent cases require special arrangements, faster documentation processing, and sometimes even a specially booked flight. Such a service can cost 5,500–7,000 euros, but the process can be completed within 3–4 days.

How to compare offers from different companies

When you receive price quotes from several companies, it is important to know how to compare them correctly. The lowest price does not always mean the best deal.

First of all, ask for a detailed breakdown of costs. If a company provides only a single number without any explanation, it should raise questions. A reliable company can always explain what you are paying for.

Ask what is included in the specified price. Does it cover all services from start to finish? Is the paperwork included? Does the coffin meet air transport requirements? Are there any situations where the price could increase?

Pay attention to how the company communicates with you. Do they answer your questions patiently? Do you feel pressured to make a quick decision? Do they understand your situation and treat you with respect? These things may seem unrelated to the price, but they actually demonstrate the company's professionalism and reliability.

Not everyone knows, but sometimes repatriation costs can be covered by insurance or other compensation. It is worth checking several options.

Travel insurance – if your loved one had travel insurance that covers repatriation in the event of death, it could cover all or part of the expenses. However, here is an important point: you must inform the insurance company immediately and follow their procedures. Some insurance companies have their own selected repatriation companies that you must work with to receive compensation.

Employer insurance – many Lithuanians working in Ireland have life insurance provided by their employer. Although it is usually intended to support the family, in some cases it may also provide compensation for repatriation costs. It is worth checking the insurance policy or contacting the employer.

Social support – the Lithuanian state provides a funeral allowance, which in 2024 is around 400 euros. It is not much, but it still helps cover part of the costs. Additionally, in some cases, municipalities can provide extra social support for low-income families.

This is a sensitive topic, but the reality is that not all families can afford to pay 4,000–5,000 euros immediately. And that is completely normal – most people do not have that amount of money in savings.

First of all, do not suffer in silence. Talk to the repatriation company about payment options. Many companies offer installment plans or you can wait until you sort out your finances. Yes, this is a business, but we all understand that we are working with people at the most difficult time of their lives.

Family and community help – there is no shame in asking for help. The Lithuanian community in Ireland and Lithuania often raises funds in such cases. You can organize a collection on social networks or contact Lithuanian organizations.

Bank loans – while this is not an ideal option, a quick consumer loan can be a solution. Some banks have special loan programs for unexpected expenses.

It is important to understand that the repatriation process cannot wait indefinitely for financial reasons. There are strict deadlines in Ireland within which documents must be processed and the deceased's remains must be removed. Therefore, the financial situation must be resolved quickly.

Returning to the topic mentioned at the beginning of the article – why is it so important to talk about money at such a sensitive time? Because uncertainty and surprises only add stress to an already difficult situation.

The real repatriation cost from Ireland to Lithuania for most families ranges from 3,500 to 5,000 euros for the entire process. If you are offered a significantly lower price, be cautious and ask what is missing from that price. If a significantly higher price is offered without a clear explanation, it is also worth checking other companies.

Working in this field, we see our mission not only as providing services professionally but also as helping families feel safe and informed. When you know what to expect, when you understand the process and its price, you can focus on what truly matters – saying goodbye to your loved one and supporting each other.

No one should be afraid to ask about prices or request explanations. It is your right to know what you are paying for. And if a company does not want to be transparent or avoids answering direct questions – it is a clear signal to look for another company. In this field, trust and transparency are no less important than the quality of the service itself.
