When is a ferry chosen to transport the deceased’s remains?
When transporting from European countries such as Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland), it is not possible to transport human remains using only specialized road transport. In such cases, ferry services are additionally used.
By combining road transport and ferry services, it is often possible to repatriate human remains or an urn with ashes more cheaply and sometimes faster than by air. Our company rarely uses ferry services, but it does so when necessary. It is chosen when it is the most economical and safest way to transport human remains.
What are the requirements for transporting human remains by ferry?
No additional requirements apply to transporting the deceased by ferry compared to road transport.
It is important that the coffin complies with international standards. A double zinc-lined coffin must have a metal (zinc) inner lining and a wooden outer casing. The inner zinc coffin must be hermetically sealed prior to transportation. The base of the coffin must contain a layer of antiseptic material with a hygroscopic substance of at least 5 cm. The outer wooden coffin is also sealed using metal bands and officially sealed.
During transportation by vehicle, the required temperature of 0°C to 4°C (as in a mortuary) is maintained, except during ferry transit.
The coffin is securely fixed inside the vehicle to ensure stability and safe transport, including during the ferry crossing.
